1st Inaugural “Juneteenth Jubilee Prichard AL

Prichard, AL- The official launch of the Inaugural “Juneteenth Jubilee” celebration will be held on Tuesday, April 17th , 2018 at Prichard City Hall at 12:00pm. The Juneteenth Jubilee will take place from Tuesday,  June 12th, 2018, through Saturday,  June 17th , 2018 throughout the City of Prichard, AL.

Along with events such as “Picnic in the Park” and the “Health and Wellness Fair”, local artists and business leaders will showcase their talents during the many segments of the week-long event.  Some area businesses will also open their doors to festival goers and many areas will be set up for family entertainment, arts and crafts, music showcases, and much more.  Area professionals can look forward to business conferences and presentations as well as networking sessions and local trade and tax seminars. Some streets will be closed to traffic to accommodate the celebration.

Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom and achievement while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures. As it takes on a greater national and even global perspective, the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865 are not forgotten. Currently, Juneteenth is enjoying phenomenal growth within communities throughout the country and is either a state holiday or a day of commemoration in the 50 states. Institutions such as the Smithsonian, the Henry Ford Museum and others have begun sponsoring Juneteenth-centered activities - all with the mission to promote and cultivate knowledge and appreciation of African American history and culture.

“It is imperative to The City of Prichard to elevate the awareness of Juneteenth not only because of its importance to African American history but also because of the affiliation our area has to the last known African slaves brought to the Americas by The Clotilde.” states Prichard Mayor, Jimmy Gardner. “By celebrating Juneteenth, we honor its significance to the African American community by sharing this history with the children and families of Prichard and it’s neighboring areas.
